The mental game — and the frustrations that come with it — is most pronounced in putting. Why is that?

You can recover for a poor drive with a good iron shot. You can recover for a poor iron shot with a good chip. But you can’t recover from a missed 4-foot putt. That’s where pressure comes in — and that’s where frustration also creeps in.

Another reason it seems so frustrating is that — it seems so simple! You have a flat piece of metal, on a stick, a smooth stretch of grass, everybody is being quiet… so why do we miss short putts?

Even the Pros miss 3-footers! Rory has been infamous for doing this on the big stage… he misses a short putt… twice in a row ! What happened?

We don’t suddenly forget how to do the simple action of swinging a putter back and forth. What happens is: we get in our own way. The mental obstacles of:

   – Doubt

   – Anxiety

   – Hesitation

   – Over-thinking (and the like)

… undermine our confidence! And interfere with our ability to perform!

Mental game mastery, is about clearing the interference, taking the pressure off you, focusing on your process rather than results, and developing CONFIDENCE!

You must develop a good putting routine that includes Visualization if you want to develop CONFIDENCE to make short pressure putts.

Stay tuned for future articles to build putting confidence….

The distance you putt a golf ball is determined by 2 variables:

     1) the SPEED the putter head moves back and through the ball

     2) the DISTANCE the putter head moves back and through the ball

If you control one variable so that it is CONSTANT — then you can put all your attention on to only one variable.

It is generally accepted by teaching professionals that you should maintain the SPEED at a constant level — and thus you only need to adjust the DISTANCE the putter head moves back and through the ball.

To maintain your SPEED at a constant level you just use the exact same tempo for every putting stroke. Constant Tempo will give you constant Speed. Every stroke you make should be just like a Grandfather Clock…. the same evenly paced tempo — resulting in the same speed. Every time. Tick-tock, tick-tock,… the same.

Now to control the distance you roll the ball, you simply adjust the LENGTH of your backstroke. Whether you’re lining up a 20-foot putt or a 2-footer, the length of your backstroke determines the distance the ball will roll. The longer the putt… the longer the stroke. Deliciously simple!

Phil Mickelson knows a thing or two about putting.

In this video he explains that:

Face Alignment is the most critical thing in putting…

… and he says this is what explains why so many different putting stokes are effective. All that matters (for the actual direction of the ball) is the alignment of the putter face at the point of impact.

Phil points out that even if you have a gorgeous putting stroke path… the path of the ball will be determined by the alignment of your putter face to the ball at the point of impact. That’s it. Complete. Done deal.

In order to ensure that the putter face is perfectly in line with your intended target at the moment of impact, your chances of doing this are greater if you try to maintain the “Perfect Alignment” for a short distance before — and after — impact. This area is commonly referred to as the “Critical Hitting Zone” because this is the area (or zone) of your putting stroke where it is critical to have the right position of the putter face.

In summary, if you can square up your putter face in the “Critical Hitting Zone” — then you will be well on your way to having a critical advantage to sinking more putts.

The biggest take-away from these stats (besides the obvious point that Paul McGiley is a “Rock Star” as a captain and player in match play with 12 wins to 1 loss) is that the US is not very good at Foursomes.

Watson was correct to observe this after it happened again, but it has been a glaring problem since 2002 — so the prudent action would be to do something about it. Study it, strategize about it… and practice it. Each of the 2 players should figure out which 9 holes they will tee-off on,and then they can both pretty much anticipate every shot they will be playing in the match (give or take).

Focus on 9 specific tee shots, 9 specific approaches, and 9 first putts on specific greens. Discuss and rationalize the optimal combinations of players and holes to be played with your partner, your teammates, and your captain… and come up with the winning formula. Voila!
